“China Orchid Valley”

“China Orchid Valley” is set up in Shenzhen Wutongshan Nurseries. There is 1,200-mu lands in this plantation that is specialized in orchid yield. Now, there are 200-mu merchandized cultivation and yield base for orchid scientific research, 7.5 million plants of orchid and 50,000 square meters of greenhouse. The newly nursed pocket-shaped orchid that is named as “Plant Panda” has 50 varieties (only 66 varieties in the world), and orchid variety in the base is 136. This base enjoys 31 professional talents in various disciplines, in which, 4 advanced engineers researcher, 5 engineers and over 30 specialized talents who all go in for orchid research. While, advanced engineer Liu Zhongjian enjoys more than ten years’ experience in orchid production and management research. In recent years, he has published more than 10 articles on orchid, and his three monographs of 1.6 million characters: Chinese Orchid Cultivation, Prevention and Control of Plant Diseases and Pests, and Appreciation of Rare Variety, Chinese Orchid Crystal Art Research and Appreciation of Rare Variety, Chinese Orchid Exotic Flowers Research and Appreciation of Rare Variety. Engineer Liu Zhongjian is the first domestic young orchid expert who has rich practicing experience and high theoretical level. Professor Chen Xinqi who is orchid authority in China, judger of International Orchid Organization, president of China Orchid Institute, director of evolution lab of original Chinese Academy of Sciences System and teacher of doctors is employed to be engaged in orchid research over a long period of time. In addition, the base also engages expert and advanced engineer Ru Zhengzhong who has made prominent contribution and enjoys allowance of the State Council. 1.     Background of the project. 

1)      Orchid—the most popular flower.

Orchid is the shortened form of the whole orchid family; there are 15,000 varieties in the world and 1270 varieties in China that mainly distributes in the south border district between the tropics and subtropics. Orchid that has big and beautiful flower, long florescence, and plump leaf is the one of the most popular flowers in the world now, and there are billions of lovers in foreign countries. Orchid is one of the most important flower industries in the world with an annual sales volume of USD a few billion. In our country, orchid distributes more than ten provinces and regions that is south to Hainan, north to Zhejiang, and west to Xizang, Yunnan and Guizhou. Western provinces, eastern provinces, partial counties and cities all have orchid associations and orchid markets, moreover, orchid exposition is held each year. Orchid industry in our country is in the early days of development and has a good prospect, meanwhile, hybridization and cultivation of new variety is greatly required in the development of orchid industry. While, establishment of wild orchid gene base will provide reliable guarantee for reserve of improved variety and parent and also lay a firm foundation for large-scale development of orchid industry in our country.

3)      Orchid—rich touring resource and cultural meaning.

Orchid is not only flower resource, but also an important kind of touring resource. Touring project that organizes orchid fans to sightsee and visit in the country of origin is common internationally. Our country also has ever received many orchid touring and investigation groups of England, Germany, North Europe and America. But, because of a terrible havoc in orchid resource and no special nature preserve of orchid, the effect is not ideal very much. If natural wild orchid garden that integrates preservation and touring can be set up in the south border district of the tropics or subtropics, it maybe has a good prospect. Because most orchid that is epiphyte lives on the trunk, branch, or rock, and it easily integrates with garden, furthermore, a large number of poems, songs and paintings have left in the history, beautiful and graceful natural garden can be completely set up. With the improvement of people’s living standard, increasing of holidays, and multi-level requirement on touring, in addition, advantages in transport facilities and close to Hong Kong, the action that establishes the largest wild orchid garden in East Asia and forms a new, natural and ecological scenic spot has a good prospect and enormous advantage in preservation of orchid resource, development of flower industry and touring industry, and improvement of city environment.

2.     Summarization and target of the Project

“China Orchid Valley” is put forward, raised fund, and established by Shenzhen Landscape (Group) Co., Ltd and Shenzhen Wutongshan Nurseries. The project is positioned as a specialized theme garden that integrates orchid viewing, collection, cultivation, and preservation. The main function of the project is to propagate orchid culture and consciousness of environmental protection, view in touring, and cultivate and sell orchid. The project that is located in the general nursery plantation of Wutong Hill is planned to occupy 100-mu land and invest RMB 28 million, and has a construction period of 10 years. Orchid is international emphatically preserved plant, establishment of “China Orchid Valley” is of important significance to collection and preservation of orchid and establishment of orchid variety gene base to research and develop orchid. Therefore, this is a project that integrates economic efficiency and social efficiency.

3.     Condition and advantage of project investment.

The enterprise—Shenzhen Wutongshan Nurseries that is subordinated to our group has 1200-mu land; it is back to forest district of Wutong Hill, it is suitable for orchid growth. In addition, it enjoys many years’ experience in cultivate orchid and 200-mu merchandized yield base for orchid scientific research, and collects more than 50 orchid varieties. So, it becomes the largest orchid yield base in our country, and enjoys a great popularity in the world. At the same time, this enterprise that enjoys tremendous strength in gardens designing and construction has made enormous achievements. Three projects that the enterprise participates in designing, construction and conservation in 1999 rank the first third place in the comprehensive appraisal of block’s environment in Shenzhen. East Sea Garden that the enterprise constructs and conserves is awarded as the only “Class AAA Residential Quarter” by Construction Department.

Former principal Liu Zhongjian of the plantation is always committing himself to scientific research for a long time; he has published more than 70 articles in domestic and foreign learned periodical, and he has wrote three monographs: Chinese Orchid Cultivation, Prevention and Control of Plant Diseases and Pests, and Appreciation of Rare Variety, Chinese Orchid Crystal Art Research and Appreciation of Rare Variety, Chinese Orchid Exotic Flowers Research and Appreciation of Rare Variety, the total character has 3 million.

Fortunately, the plantation has employed professor Chen xinqi who is board chairman of China Orchid Institute, researcher of plant lab of China Academy of Sciences and teacher of doctors, and member of IUCN International Orchid Profession Team; he has ever acted as the international judger of Japan and Germany International Foreign Orchid Exposition; he is world-famous orchid expert and also contact person of viewing orchid.

4.     Project planning.

“China Orchid Valley” that locates in Shenzhen Wutongshan Nurseries enjoys planned 100-mu land. It is a ideal place that is quiet, graceful, green and surrounded by the hills.

1)      Overall Plan

“China Orchid Valley” is a specialized theme garden that integrates viewing; collection and preservation of orchid, two aspects of carrying forward the good traditions and making innovations are given considerations in planning in order to not only reflect a long history of orchid culture so as to make people understand more about Chinese orchid culture, but also break the traditional pattern of gardens so as to meet the requirements of modern society, and the final target is to make it become a orchid valley with appearance of garden, content of orchid culture, scientific research and touring value in theme series of Wutongshan Beauty Spot. In the planning picture of the orchid valley, road forms the skeleton, central lake is the center of the composition of the picture, and building, rockwork, plant (most is orchid) are decorated around the center in order to enrich the sight area and make the orchid valley lively.

Major building in the orchid valley is: orchid cultural palace, greenhouse, orchid house, pavilion, and corridor. These buildings that have various patterns and reasonable functions are constructed closely to the lake, or set up near to stone, or built under the trees; they are arranged freely and set up on requirement so as to satisfy the purpose of exhibition, rest, viewing. In the orchid valley, a main touring route of the road system is running through the whole garden so as to settle the visiting and fire-fighting and manage the vehicle’s running and evacuating, meanwhile, winding path is set up to connect all scenic spots so as to guide the tourists to view the scenery and have a rest. The overall planning of the orchid valley is to integrate organically all composing factors that includes rockery, water, tree, road and building to form a rich and colorful picture through relying on and setting off one another to become a good touring and entertaining place for the visitors.

2)      Design of scenic spot

Seeing that orchid is suitable to be viewed closely and quietly, especially, rare variety of orchid is potted plant, and a special quiet environment is required. Therefore, plants is closed planted surrounding the garden to form a shield and management of partition must be carried through to achieve the desired result. Concrete partition is as follows: entrance area, rare orchid garden, office and service area, orchid culture area, orchid classification area, area of orchid that lives on the rock, quiet entertainment area, orchid house and central lake.

    a. Central Lake: It is the center of the whole garden and locates in the middle west of the garden. Though this area is not big, it has a free form. On the winding lakeshore, there is willow, pavilion and platform, and essence of surrounding scenic spots is collected here. Along the lake, there is carved stone with poem and inscription about orchid on it, and bridge, brook, rockery, fountain and fragrant thoroughwort. In this quiet and lively space, through natural scenery, inscription, and carving stone, the orchid is set off more quiet and graceful, “interest” of theme scenic spot is created, and character of the garden is displayed. 

b. Rare orchid garden: It locates in the west of the garden and is separated with the east of the garden by the entrance road. The garden is laid out with a traditional way; rare variety of orchid is cultivated in the form of potted, hanging, suspended and adnascent; it can be divided into bamboo district, palm district and wooded district.

c. Orchid culture area: Orchid cultural center is the theme building that is pointed out the theme by famous calligrapher, varieties of orchid is arranged around the garden road, meanwhile, integrates carving stone that has orchid inscription to enrich the cultural content. Rare variety of orchid is displayed inside the exhibition and on the old table. Fragrant of the orchid is mentally refreshing both inside and outside the exhibition.

d. Entrance area and office and service area: Entrance area is decorated with a large area of grassland and integrates nameplate, banyan and other arbors, meanwhile, many adnascent orchid is planting in this area to spread the fragrant of orchid. In the east side of the entrance, parking lot for various types of vehicles is set up in order to make the parking convenient. While, office and serve area is the bureau of the nursery and the hinterland of orchid valley. There are many buildings here originally and it is not easy to change, in order to separate and coordinate with other scenic spots, adopt plant to produce an instinct gradation in the space, at the same time, integrates vertical forestation, plant many adnascent orchid and make use of original building to decorate and beautify this area.

e. Orchid classification: Different living conditions are set and created according to habits and characteristics of orchid to show the original wilding interest of orchid and intensify the visitor’s impression. While, lithophytes orchid area is decorated with orchid matching with rock, and integrates rockery and waterscape to create a winding space gradation.

f. Quiet entertainment area: It is set up at one corner of the central lake area, pavilion is decorated here to provide a quiet place for the visitors to rest and enjoy the scenery and orchid.

g. Modern orchid house: It is area that integrates orchid yield. Majority is potted orchid in the form of potted and suspended, meanwhile, there matched orchid variety that lives according to different climate. And it is a place for the visitors to view a large number of orchids.

3)      Plant Arrangement

Orchid Valley is in the general plantation of the nursery; plant variety here is more than other common gardens. Except common arbor and ornamental plant, there has old forest to lay a good foundation for the setup of orchid valley. Plant arrangement regards quiet environment that is provided by orchid as the precondition and adopts variety of different height, shade and spacing to compose many natural communities that become many scenes.
